A chronic wound may be defined as one that is physiologically impaired due to a disruption of the wound healing cycle. Wound healing normally progresses at a sustained, measurable rate. A chronic state is defined by some as a less than 15 percent reduction of the surface area of the wound over one week, or less than 50 percent reduction over one month.

Diabetic foot wounds, chronic orthopedic wounds, chronic abdominal wounds, pressure ulcers, ulcerated and fungating malignancy-related wounds, arterial wounds, and venous ulcers.

Local care of chronic wounds includes debridement and proper wound dressings. Local treatment should also be directed toward dealing with the most troublesome chronic wound problems that affect the patient physically and emotionally, such as odor, bleeding, itching, excess exudate, pain, and minimizing infection. Adjuncts to wound healing may include negative pressure wound therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, provided there are no contraindications for their use.

Patients who have non-healing wounds require specialized and aggressive care. In traditional medical settings, many patients may not receive the interdisciplinary attention that these wounds require. For these people, minor lesions can unfortunately lead to chronic, non-healing wounds with serious infection, gangrene and possible amputation. Specialized utilizing an interdisciplinary can improve outcomes and assist patients to heal and return to their daily life activities.

There are many reasons for this common problem. The good news is that there is usually a simple solution such as treating irritated skin around the stoma, ensuring that the cut is adequate to fit the stoma, and ensuring that the correct barrier is selected to fit the patient’s natural contours.
